Golden Dawn – Tavern of Power
Opening less than a year ago, Golden Dawn has quickly become one of Auckland’s most iconic bars.
Owners Stephen Marr and Sam Chapman (ex Matterhorn, Wellington) wanted to create a unique atmosphere that was warm and inviting, and they’ve achieved this in spades.
Golden Dawn’s speakeasy-style entrance (their blog says “If you cannot find us, we are not there”) gives way to an oasis of effortlessly laidback, carnival-esque cool unlike anything else in Auckland. The easy-going atmosphere has made Golden Dawn a popular hangout for Auckland’s creative community, offering a distinct departure from the traditional high-spec glamour of other bars along the Ponsonby strip.
Inside, Golden Dawn features what general manager Kelly Gibney refers to as a “clever gypsy vibe”, carefully pieced together by designer Alistair Cox and coupled with fresh flowers and candles.
Outside is where Golden Dawn really comes alive. The large outdoor area is the perfect place to enjoy a rum in the sun, share delicious peasant-style platters and enjoy the wide range of entertainment on offer, from the best of NZ artists through to riotous DJ nights and more.
Serving more than 20 different rums, STOLEN remains Golden Dawn’s most popular, according to bar manager Nick Harrison. He says rum has made a real resurgence over the past year. “People are starting to become much more familiar with rum and over the summer it’s the number one drink of choice.”
Along with serving a weekly STOLEN Rum punch for patrons to enjoy, one of Nick’s most popular cocktails has been the Trinidad Sour, made with Angostura bitters, STOLEN Golden Rum, orgeat and lime juice. With a dense flavour of almonds and an approachable bitterness, it’s the perfect drink to sit back and enjoy while taking in the unique atmosphere that makes Golden Dawn unforgettable.
