Atip Wananaruks of The Department Store

Atip Wananaruks by Tom Roberton

Recently, Atip Wananaruks, was voted the best dressed man in Auckland, an honour bestowed on him by a certain lifestyle rag. We thought we’d let the man speak for himself on the oft-discussed topic of how to dress well.

Atip W. says that this summer, men should really be wearing a complete 50s look. White t-shirt, chinos and plain plimsolls – Vans or Converse. It’s simple, and classic. Take care of your appearance and you’ll go far, or at least, further.

A freelance fashion stylist and consultant, Atip W. has gone far, or at least, further than the Richmond, London sweetshop where he stole a handful of penny lollies at age four. He is ashamed to say this. He was caught, unfortunately, he says, and forced to tell his mother and break open his piggy bank to repay the sum.

Now, he lives in Auckland, where as well as directing the fashion content of magazine Remix, he is the buyer for The Men’s Department, the latest addition to Takapuna’s Department Store. He selects bits and bobs and shirts and trousers to clad the men of Auckland. Much of it comes from Topman, some of it from elsewhere. We’re particularly partial to the Happy Socks and the Saint James stripey tees. They’re fresh and smart and remind us of Picasso at the beach.

Atip W. likes a few things. He likes his Simon Miller jeans which have been preworn and patched so he didn’t have to. They are worn for a lifetime and bought in an instant, he says. He likes his Junya Watanabe sandshoes. He likes nights out with friends, but it doesn’t really matter where.

And he liked, no loved, the cocktail that STOLEN Rum served at the opening of The Men’s Department.

Favourite STOLEN Rum cocktail: STOLEN Dry – STOLEN Gold Rum, ginger ale and a fresh wedge of lime.
